The Radicchio Festival

Every year on January, the “Festa del Radicchio Città di Mirano e dei Sapori della Tradizione Veneta” (Mirano Radicchio and Traditional Venetian Flavors Festival) is held, an event that originated when the Mirano area was included in the production zone for Radicchio Rosso di Treviso PGI and Radicchio Variegato di Castelfranco PGI.

The festival involves not only radicchio producers, but also students and various productive forces in the city.

Under the patronage of the Veneto Region and the Municipality, the event is organized by Pro Loco Mirano in collaboration with the farmers’ associations (CIA, COLDIRETTI, CONFAGRICOLTORI), La Strada del Radicchio, and the “8 Marzo – K. LORENZ” Higher Education Institute in Mirano./p>

The exhibition is held in PIAZZA MARTIRI, where radicchio, brought by producers from the area (about forty), will be displayed under wooden stalls arranged around the oval shape of the square.

In addition to radicchio, there will also be ‘the flavors of Venetian tradition’, with around fifty other stands along the streets leading to the historic center, where visitors can purchase selected local food and wine products.

We will have artisanal cheeses from across the region, from the plains to the hills to the mountain pastures, made from cow’s, sheep’s, or goat’s milk. Our cheeses will also be compared with others from Carnia, Puglia, and Tuscany. There will be no shortage of cured meats, led by sopressa, which will be compared with Mora Romagnola cured meats. And then there will be oil, preserves, rice, all kinds of flour, beans and nuts, vegetables, herbal teas, wine, beer, and grappa (including radicchio), chocolate, honey, and biscuits. And then there is a product of excellence: saffron, which is produced right here in our region by a young entrepreneur.

In the morning, the official opening of the event will take place in the presence of the authorities, and participation certificates will be awarded to the producers present. The top three winners of the drawing competition for primary schools, organized by the CIA, will also be awarded prizes. All the entries received will be exhibited in Piazza Martiri.

In the afternoon, there will be traditional folk music and dancing.

There will also be a small food stand where you can find specialties made with radicchio (musetto al radicchio and radicchio ai ferri), sausage sandwiches, and Italian mulled wine to warm you up!
