In June, during the celebration of Corpus Christi, a truly unique challenge takes place in Noale between the districts (Bastia, Cerva, Drago, Gato, San Giorgio, San Giovanni, and San Urbano) and the Tempesta Group of the Palio di Noale to add greater decorum and splendor to the Christian solemnity: to form a floral carpet of over 100 square meters, composed of paintings depicting religious scenes framed by a grassy mantle.
The Infiorata, a tradition widespread in central and southern Italy and in Latin American countries, has found a splendid location in Noale, thanks to the Pro Loco and the Contrade, among the historic buildings and porticoes inside the castle. The tradition of decorating the streets and square of the medieval village with branches during the solemnity of Corpus Christi had already existed for a long time; now, flowers have been added to the branches. Thousands of petals laid on the sand by skilled hands create a great pictorial effect, different every year. The artistic group works for months before the event to decide on the design, often linked to religious symbols, to define the colors and materials, to organize the work that will last many hours, and thus give the people of Noale and the many visitors a unique and always original spectacle.
The artists use thousands of petals, herbal essences, cereals, stems, and natural materials, which they lay on the road surface near the ancient Bell Tower. It is a work that requires coordination, teamwork (with the help of children from local kindergartens), and a great deal of dedication. This is the meaning of the ancient tradition, which is therefore not just for show. The day ends with the Corpus Domini procession under the Bell Tower, in front of the pictures made with flowers, which are then trampled on by the children.
This is how one of the main solemnities of the liturgical year is rediscovered and an ancient tradition is revived: the Infiorata, which has its roots in the ancient popular festival of the “Infrascata”. The event has become one of the most eagerly awaited events for the people of Noale and the many enthusiastic tourists who travel around Italy to discover its beauty and traditions.
