Flowers in Mirano

“Fiori a Mirano” (Flowers in Mirano), the longest-running flower festival in the Venetian hinterland, is an event dedicated to the horticultural sector, the pleasures of gardening, learning about plants and how to care for them, and discovering the latest in outdoor furnishings. On April 25, Mirano is a destination for everyone: for those who love and practice gardening, for those who are simply curious, and for those who just want to take a relaxing stroll among scents and colors.

The central theme of the event is the rose, in homage to the ancient Venetian tradition of the “Festa del Bòcolo”,  according to which, on April 25, every lover gives his beloved a red rosebud. For this reason, around Piazza Martiri and in the adjacent streets, you will find leading specialist nurseries offering a wide range of antique roses, collector’s roses, scented roses, and new varieties created by the most renowned names in the industry, as well as by young nursery artists with new ideas and proposals, the result of a rigorous selection process aimed at satisfying the desires of the most sophisticated and knowledgeable gardeners. What’s more, there is a secret competition among the nurseries to see who can display the newest, most fragrant, or rarest varieties of roses on this day.

But you won’t find only roses. If you are curious or looking for new species, “Fiori a Mirano” is an elegant showcase created especially for you. Over 120 carefully selected exhibitors await you to offer you the latest innovations or simply the ones best suited to your needs: flowering plants for pots, shrubs and small trees for small gardens, citrus fruits, climbing plants, perennials, aromatic plants, plants for shady areas, acidophilic plants, bonsai, succulents… And then, when spring is over and the tulip, daffodil, and grape hyacinth bulbs have finished flowering, you can replace them with summer-flowering bulbs: lilies, agapanthus, dahlias, astilbe, canna lilies…

Ortomania: red, yellow, and black tomatoes; purple, white, and striped eggplants; chili peppers of varying degrees of spiciness; you don’t need a field to grow them, you can also grow them in pots on your terrace. If you’re curious and want to try them, you’ll find them in the square in Mirano. If, on the other hand, you have decided to reorganize your space or terrace, you will find a wide range of garden sheds, garden furniture, umbrellas, tables, pots… You will find new ideas for setting up green spaces in the gardens recreated for the occasion, including that of the Istituto 8 Marzo/Lorenz.

As per tradition, the Vetrine in Fiore (Flowered Shop Windows), Miglior Espositore (Best Exhibitor), and Miglior Giardino (Best Garden) competitions will take place in the morning. Watercolor lessons for children will be held in the Barchessa di Villa Errera. In the afternoon, you can enjoy a concert on the stage in front of the Town Hall, and at 6 p.m., the children who participated in the watercolor workshop will receive their awards.

Visitors to Mirano will find more than just flowers, as they can visit the parks, 18th-century villas, the cathedral with its famous altarpiece of St. Anthony by Gianbattista Tiepolo or De Min’s Last Judgment, and enjoy a moment of gratifying pleasure in the restaurants, tasting menus based on aromatic herbs, spring produce and, above all, seasonal local products.
